Sufiana Kalaams by Deveshi Saghal
India

Deveshi Sahgal is a singer-songwriter and composer from New Delhi, trained in Hindustani classical music. Her work lies at the intersection of tradition, introspection, and contemporary atmospheric soundscapes. Rooted in storytelling, her music explores longing, intimacy, and inner conflict—allowing space, silence, and nuance to carry emotional weight.

Growing up, Deveshi was introduced to diverse musical landscapes, from her father’s collection of ghazals, qawwalis, and classic Hindi film music to her mother’s rock collection of rock and roll classics, the likes of Pink Floyd, that stood out. What weaved both these worlds together for her was poetic lyricism and a universal truth; this early influence drew Deveshi towards singing Sufiana kalams by Baba Bulleh Shah, Hazrat Amir Khusro, and Daag Dehlvi—poetry that stemmed from unconditional human love and moved towards the divine. The journey of obliteration of the egoic self to find a higher truth is also a journey from human emotion to spiritual transcendence—the alchemy of love turning towards the divine that guides her own lyrical expression through the songs that she sings.

Deveshi has performed at several leading Sufi music festivals such as the Jashn-e-Rekhta, Jahan-e-Khusrau, and The World Sacred Spirit Festival, along with many other music and cultural festivals across the country.

Deveshi made her Bollywood debut as lead singer for the song “Daryaa” with the country’s leading music director/producer Amit Trivedi. She was also part of the first season of Coke Studio Bharat with the song “Das Mein Ki Pyaar Vichon Khatteya,” a Punjabi folk song along with Kanwar Grewal.

Deveshi has recently released her debut EP, Woh Jagah, with Tiger Baby Records in partnership with Zoya Akhtar, Ankur Tiwari, and Reema Kagti.

For Deveshi, music is not a performance of emotion but a form of quiet truth-telling. Each piece becomes both a personal catharsis and an invitation for listeners into spaces of contemplation, intimacy, and human connection.
